The Evolution of a Phenomenon can be characterized by clear stages.

1. The Core Concept

A dominant personality or leaders propose an innovative concept that promises a panacea for alienated and vulnerable people.

And so it goes. They’re getting ready to storm the compound down in Brisbane. Tensions are rising. Signs of trouble appear from the sidelines. An isolated player, exposed, anxious, the slogan POSITIVE INTENT smeared across his chest as a symbol, has come staggering through the lines and is being led away in secrecy to a different team elsewhere.

Do you recall the early days, when the world was still young? The days of Bazball 1.0, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Initial Adoration

Cult leaders promise a fresh beginning, hope for a future, love, success among a group with shared faith in the philosophy.

What was this thing at first? Players celebrating enjoying success. Tattoos. Muscles. Determination. Peak performance vibes. Of course, England’s players insist it’s not a real term, ironically because if it doesn’t exist, what exactly did I just watch?

But we know the concept. It’s the batsman playing a shot so unconventional it has to be pixelated. It’s the adrenaline of Ben Stokes in ultimate mode, a look that says: thoughtful warrior, strong features, natural look, truly contemporary you half-expect to notice and find him positioned at mid-off bare-chested embracing nature.

It’s the batsman still being allowed to talk in press conferences, resembling a joyful figure formally attired, saying stuff like we’re breaking down traditions. And yes, the vibe, for a significant period, was uplifting.

3. The Growth Phase

Development stage. Unity enforced via memorization of mantras. These beliefs can appear contradictory to prove commitment.

Does anyone else feel? The reaction, the outrage, the disappointment following the initial loss seems too strong, overdone. The performance was poor on the field, as is typical there. Or at least, the team has long been exclusive, a group, a private event, an insular community with centuries of opaque and ritualistic cult history supporting it.
